Tennis player Camila Giorgi retires suddenly aged 32 without any official statement

By | May 9, 2024

The 32-year-old had posted to her Instagram story on Tuesday (May 7) but only shared a selfie without any caption. Leaving tennis silently would be an unusual way to retire, having been a top 30 player and reached the last eight of Wimbledon in 2018 and the quarter-finals of the Olympics in 2020.

Giorgi did not enter the French Open and her last match was against Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open on March 23, having registered her retirement with the ITIA. She has been taken out of the anti-doping testing protocols through this declaration for at least six months, which are necessary in order to play professional tennis.

The 2021 Canadian Open champion amassed over 700,000 followers on Instagram after posting saucy snaps as a lingerie model, but admitted to having very few close friends on the WTA Tour, instead looking away from the sport for companionship.

“No,” she said in 2021 when asked if she had grown close with any of her rivals. “I compete with them but I still think there is a good relationship between us. On the WTA Tour the atmosphere is very good but my real friends do something else.

“It’s nice that they do other types of work, so we talk about tennis. When I finish training and go out with them we talk about other things, other projects and other things and I like it. They are all artists and as soon as we can we organise ourselves to see museums.”
