An Indonesian flight was delayed after passengers complained about a strong, foul smell in the cabin caused by a fruit, according to BBC News and The Jakarta Post.
Durian is a large, spiky fruit popular in Asia that gives off an overwhelming odor, earning it the nickname of world’s smelliest fruit.
Just over 2 tons of the controversial fruit was being stowed in the cargo hold of the Sriwijaya Air flight, which was traveling from Bengkulu to Jakarta, the news sites report.
The airline eventually listened to passengers’ complaints and removed the fruit from the plane. The plane departed an hour later than scheduled.
Sriwajiya Air’s senior corporate communications manager Retri Maya told The Jakarta Post that the airline had the right to carry the stinky fruit.
“It’s not illegal to carry durian in a flight as long as it is wrapped properly in accordance with flight regulations – carried inside the hold,” the statement read. “Many airlines do this.”
