Hawaii is a top holiday destination for American travelers. Routes between the mainland US and Hawaii are highly competitive, with various airlines competing for market share. Travelers can choose from budget-friendly options like Southwest Airlines’ economy seats to luxury first-class cabins on American Airlines .

In August 2024, American Airlines had 789 scheduled flights between the mainland US and the Hawaiian Islands, according to the aviation analytics company Cirium. The airline has a significant presence at its main hub, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) in Texas, where it controls many routes to Hawaii. Notably, American Airlines was the only airline flying from Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) to Hawaiian destinations this month.

Honolulu (HNL) leads the way
Honolulu Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is the most popular Hawaiian destination served by American Airlines from DFW airport. According to Cirium data, American Airlines operates 14 weekly flights from DFW to HNL, using two aircraft types: the Boeing 737 MAX 8 narrowbody and the Boeing 777-200ER widebody.

Another Hawaiian destination also served only by American Airlines from DFW is Kahului Airport (OGG), the main airport in Maui. Cirium data reveals that the carrier operates seven weekly flights between the two destinations using its fleet of Boeing 737 MAX 8.

Presently, American Airlines operates a fleet of 47 Boeing 777-200ER widebodies and 62 Boeing 737 MAX 8 narrowbody aircraft, according to ch-aviation data. The carrier also has 38 Boeing 737 MAX 8s on order.

The data shows that the airline’s 777-200ER aircraft can seat up to 273 passengers in a four-class cabin configuration: 37 in business class, 24 in premium economy, 66 in economy plus, and 146 in economy class. Meanwhile, American Airlines’ Boeing 737 MAX 8 can accommodate a total of 172 passengers in a three-class cabin layout: 16 in business class, 30 in economy plus, and 126 in economy class.

Not just DFW
American Airlines provides flights to Hawaii not only from its main hub at DFW but also from other locations. In fact, the airline offers more flights to Hawaii from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) than from DFW.

The most popular route from LAX is to Honolulu (HNL), with 186 round-trip flights between the two airports this month. Closely following is the LAX to Kona International Airport (KOA), with a total of 62 round-trip flights. It is worth noting that both routes are operated using the fleet of Airbus A321neo aircraft.
