WESTJET PLANE EVACUATED AFTER SMOKE FILLS CABIN

A WestJet flight from Vancouver to Nanaimo was evacuated after smoke filled the cabin just before landing. The incident occurred on a Bombardier Q400 aircraft with 58 passengers on board. As the plane approached Nanaimo Airport, the cabin and flight deck began filling with smoke, prompting the crew to declare an emergency. After landing safely, passengers were instructed to leave everything behind and evacuate onto the tarmac.

The cause of the smoke was later determined to be an oil leak that allowed turbine oil to enter the plane’s air system, resulting in the smoke filling the cabin. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the Transportation Safety Board has since investigated the matter.

The incident involving the WestJet flight bound for Nanaimo occurred on a Bombardier Q400 aircraft, which began to fill with smoke as it approached its destination. The cabin filled with a haze, and alarms were heard. The pilots declared an emergency, and the flight crew calmly instructed passengers to leave everything behind as the plane landed safely. Evacuation procedures were initiated, and passengers were directed onto the tarmac without any belongings.

It was later revealed that the smoke was caused by an oil leak, which allowed turbine oil to enter the aircraft’s environmental control system, leading to smoke entering both the cabin and the cockpit. The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) immediately began investigating the incident, and the quick action of the crew helped avoid any injuries during the evacuation. The TSB’s investigation confirmed that the smoke did not result from a fire, but rather from the oil contamination in the ventilation system.
