WestJet passengers who were improperly charged for their first checked baggage between 2014 and 2019 may now claim their share of a $12.5 million class-action settlement. The Supreme Court of British Columbia approved this settlement in October 2024, addressing allegations that WestJet violated its tariff terms by imposing fees for the first checked bag.
Eligibility Criteria:
Domestic Flights: Passengers who booked directly with WestJet and traveled within Canada between October 29, 2014, and July 29, 2017, and paid a fee for their first checked bag.
International Flights: Passengers who booked directly with WestJet and traveled internationally between January 6, 2016, and February 27, 2019, and paid a fee for their first checked bag.
Compensation Details:
Eligible claimants will receive compensation in the form of WestJet Travel Bank credits, which can be used toward future flights. These credits are valid for 24 months from the date of issuance. The exact amount per claimant will depend on the total number of valid claims submitted. It’s estimated that each claimant could receive between $10 to $20, though the maximum potential award is $45 CAD for claims on or after July 6, 2017, and $18 CAD for claims before that date.
How to Submit a Claim:
1. Gather Documentation: Collect your WestJet booking confirmation number and proof of payment for the first checked baggage fee, such as a receipt or credit card statement.
2. Submit the Claim Form: Complete the claim form by February 10, 2025. Claims can be filed online through the official settlement website or by mailing a paper claim form to the settlement administrator.
