A WestJet flight en route from Vancouver to Toronto was forced to make an emergency landing today after smoke was detected in the cabin shortly after takeoff. Flight WS208, carrying 140 passengers and crew, was diverted back to Vancouver International Airport, where it landed safely approximately 40 minutes into the flight. No injuries were reported.
According to WestJet, the pilots declared an emergency as a precaution after smoke alarms were triggered in the cabin. The flight crew immediately followed emergency protocols, and the pilots decided to return to Vancouver to ensure passenger safety.
“At no time was there any fire present, but the presence of smoke is always treated with the utmost seriousness. Our crew acted swiftly to prioritize the safety of everyone on board,” said a WestJet representative.
Cabin Smoke Detected
Passengers onboard the flight described a tense situation when they first noticed the smell of smoke. “It started off with just a faint smell, and then the crew told us we were heading back to Vancouver because of an issue. You could tell everyone was nervous, but they handled it really well,” said one passenger.
The flight attendants remained calm and moved quickly to reassure passengers while preparing for the emergency landing. Oxygen masks were not deployed, as the smoke did not reach critical levels, but emergency services were on standby as the plane touched down at Vancouver International Airport.

“We were definitely shaken up, but WestJet did a great job making sure we were safe and helping us get back on track,” said one traveler who was scheduled to attend a business meeting in Toronto.
Despite the unsettling experience, many passengers expressed relief that the crew handled the situation professionally and that there were no injuries.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has been notified of the incident and will be conducting a full investigation to determine the cause of the smoke in the cabin. TSB officials will work with WestJet and aircraft manufacturer Boeing to ensure any underlying mechanical or technical issues are addressed before the plane returns to service.
