Lufthansa CEO Dismisses Apple AirTag as ‘Waste of Money’ While Airlines Embrace Luggage Tracking

In a surprising statement that has sparked debate across the aviation industry, Lufthansa’s CEO has dismissed Apple’s AirTag tracking device as a “waste of money,” even as other airlines increasingly rely on such technology to help reunite passengers with lost luggage. The remarks come at a time when travelers are growing more reliant on smart tracking devices to monitor their belongings, particularly in the wake of global baggage mishandling issues.

Lufthansa’s Strong Stance Against AirTags

During a recent press conference, the Lufthansa chief was asked about the airline’s stance on passenger use of Apple AirTags for tracking checked luggage. His response was unequivocal: “It’s a waste of money. AirTags create unnecessary panic among passengers and do not contribute to a more efficient baggage handling system.”

The statement is consistent with Lufthansa’s previous skepticism toward AirTags. In 2022, the airline attempted to ban the tracking devices from checked luggage, citing security concerns over their built-in lithium batteries. However, the German airline backed down after international aviation regulators clarified that AirTags were safe for air travel.

Airlines Turn to Smart Luggage Tracking

While Lufthansa remains unconvinced about the usefulness of AirTags, several other airlines have embraced similar tracking technology to improve baggage management. Major carriers, including Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, have integrated RFID (radio-frequency identification) tracking, allowing passengers to track their checked bags in real time through airline apps. Some airlines even recommend Apple AirTags as an additional layer of security for passengers worried about losing their luggage.

“Smart tracking devices like AirTags are empowering passengers,” said an industry analyst. “They provide real-time data that can help airlines locate lost bags faster, easing frustration for travelers.”

Travelers Push Back Against Lufthansa’s Stance

Many frequent travelers and industry experts disagree with Lufthansa’s dismissal of Apple’s AirTags. Social media platforms have been flooded with stories from passengers who successfully recovered misplaced luggage thanks to the tiny tracking device.

“I was able to tell the airline exactly where my lost suitcase was,” one traveler posted. “Without my AirTag, I would have been left in the dark for days.”

Tech enthusiasts also argue that Lufthansa’s skepticism ignores a growing trend of digital innovation in travel. “The future of travel is smart luggage tracking,” said a technology consultant. “Airlines should be working with these tools, not against them.”

Lufthansa’s Next Move

Despite the backlash, Lufthansa appears unlikely to change its position on Apple AirTags anytime soon. The airline has maintained that its baggage handling systems are sufficient, dismissing concerns that AirTags provide an additional layer of accountability that some carriers may find uncomfortable.

As passenger demand for luggage tracking grows, Lufthansa may face pressure to reconsider its stance—especially if competitors continue to leverage technology to improve baggage recovery. Until then, travelers flying with the airline may need to rely on their own AirTags, regardless of whether Lufthansa sees them as useful or not.
