Maria Sakkari’s drama continues. The Greek was eliminated from the US Open in the first round, and as if that wasn’t enough, she sustained an injury. The injury prevented her from playing in the upcoming WTA Guadalajara tournament, where she was supposed to defend the title she won last year. The 29-year-old shared the sad news via social media. However, this is not the end of her troubles. Due to her absence in Mexico, Sakkari will soon fall out of the top ten of the WTA rankings.

The current season for Maria Sakkari has been a complete failure. The Greek, once ranked 3rd in the world, has been bouncing off tournaments like a brick wall, and her game shows serious symptoms of mental problems. At Roland Garros, Berlin WTA, and Bad Homburg WTA, the 29-year-old didn’t even make it past the 1st round.

Maria Sakkari’s Fatal Months: The Greek Withdrew from WTA Guadalajara

At Wimbledon in the 1/16 she had to admit the superiority of Emma Raducanu, and she said goodbye to the Olympic Games in the 1/8 finals after losing to Marta Kostjuk. Her participation in the US Open also ended in the 1st round , although this time health problems got in the way. After losing 2:6 in the first set to Yafan Wang,  Sakkari had to retire, and the injury turned out to be more serious than expected .

Due to an injury, the Greek was forced to withdraw from the WTA Guadalajara tournament , which she announced via social media. This is a double blow for her, because last year she triumphed in Mexico and was supposed to defend her title. As if that were not enough, she will lose 900 points in the WTA ranking , and this brings with it further consequences.

“Last year I had one of the best moments of my career here and it remains one of my favorite tournaments. To all my fans in Mexico, I hope to see you soon. Thank you for your continued support,” the 29-year-old added.

The 29-year-old will fall outside the WTA’s top ten for the first time in a long time , although that won’t happen in the latest ranking. Last year, the tournament in Guadalajara was a week later, so the “sentence” will be postponed. The tournament is now a WTA 500, not a year ago.

Thus, the disastrous streak of Iga Świątek’s final rival in Indian Wells continues . It was definitely one of her best tournaments, but despite her promising form, the Greek had to admit the superiority of Iga Świątek. The Pole crushed her in the fight for the title 6:4, 6:0.
