Breaking News: A Giant Living Bronze Statue of Larry Bird Unveiled in French Lick, Indiana to Honor His Dedication and Contribution to Basketball and Humanity – A Legend Immortalized Forever

In an emotional and historic ceremony, the town of French Lick, Indiana unveiled a giant living bronze statue of basketball legend Larry Bird, immortalizing one of the greatest athletes the world has ever known — and paying tribute to a hometown hero who put their quiet community on the global map.

Towering over the newly renovated French Lick Civic Plaza, the statue captures Bird in mid-dribble — left-handed, focused, and unrelenting — a nod to his legendary 1986 game where he played entirely with his off-hand just to challenge himself. It’s a symbol of grit, humility, and excellence, wrapped in bronze.

“Larry Bird isn’t just a basketball icon. He’s a symbol of perseverance, humility, and dedication to both sport and community,” said Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb during the unveiling.
“This statue isn’t just for Larry — it’s for every kid in Indiana who dreams big.”

Larry Bird, affectionately known as the “Hick from French Lick,” rose from this small Indiana town to dominate college basketball at Indiana State and later redefine greatness in the NBA with the Boston Celtics.

Though he brought championships to Boston, Bird never forgot where he came from — often crediting French Lick for grounding him and shaping his values.

“This town gave me everything,” Bird said in a rare public appearance, standing before the crowd. “And I hope I gave something back.”

The base of the statue proudly displays his career highlights:

3× NBA Champion (1981, 1984, 1986)
3× NBA Most Valuable Player (1984–1986)
12× NBA All-Star
1979 NCAA Finalist with Indiana State
NBA Hall of Fame Inductee (1998)
1992 Dream Team Member & Olympic Gold Medalist
NBA Executive of the Year (2012)
Lifelong Philanthropist & Community Advocate
The surrounding plaza includes interactive displays showing archived footage, personal interviews, and photos tracing his journey from French Lick to NBA greatness.

Beyond the court, Bird has been quietly impactful through charity work, youth mentorship, and education programs — many of which still serve the people of Indiana today. Proceeds from the statue’s unveiling will go toward funding local sports development and education scholarships for underprivileged students in the region.

“Larry’s impact goes far beyond basketball. He’s touched lives, inspired generations, and given back at every step,” said event organizer and former teammate Quinn Buckner.

The crowd included thousands of fans, former teammates, coaches, and even NBA stars from multiple generations who flew in to honor the living legend. Bird’s longtime Celtics teammate Kevin McHale gave an emotional speech:

“Larry was never flashy, but he was always real. This statue is bronze, but Larry’s legacy is gold.”

As the curtain dropped and the sun caught the burnished bronze surface, fans erupted in cheers. Children wearing No. 33 jerseys ran forward to take pictures, while many longtime residents wiped away tears.

Larry Bird, ever humble, smiled and said:

“I never played for statues. I played because I loved the game. But this… this is something I’ll never forget.”

French Lick Now Holds More Than History — It Holds a Legend

With the unveiling of the statue, Larry Bird’s story comes full circle — from the dusty courts of southern Indiana to the heights of basketball immortality, and now back home, where it all began.
