WestJet pilot one of two dead in suspicious fatality case

Welfare check late last week led to discovery of man and woman’s bodies in a Parkhill homeA WestJet pilot described as a role model in her field has been identified as one of two people found dead in a southwest home in what police are calling suspicious circumstances.

The deaths were discovered shortly after 9 p.m. on Friday, when officers were called to a residence in the 0-100 block of 34th Avenue S.W. to check on the welfare of a woman who “had not been heard from for several days,” according to a Calgary police news release issued Monday.Autopsies were scheduled for Tuesday to determine the manner and cause of death, as well as to formally identify the individuals. Police have not released the names of either of the dead.

Calgary-based WestJet confirmed Tuesday that Capt. Christina Thomson was one of their pilots.

“WestJet is aware of the tragic passing of Capt. Christina Thomson,” read a statement.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out at this time to Capt. Thomson’s family, friends and all those affected by this devastating loss.”Thomson’s Facebook page states she’s a resident of Vancouver, where she appeared to enjoy sailing.

Thomson’s death is an irreplaceable loss to the aviation community, said Capt. Bernard Lewall, Chair of the WestJet Master Executive Council of the Air Line Pilots Association, International.

“Not only was Capt. Thomson a first-rate aviator, but she was also known as a driven and strong leader serving as a role model for younger women in aviation,” Lewall said in a statement.

“Her life will leave an indelible mark on all those fortunate to have met her. In addition to her professional successes, she had the unique ability to make everyone she crossed paths with feel like they were her closest friendWords cannot begin to describe the sense of devastation, grief, and profound loss which now envelops the WestJet pilot group.”

City police are continuing their investigation and have provided no further details on the deaths as of Tuesday afternoon.
