Brakes shook violently’ on Boeing 737 before United Airlines flight skidded off runway

A preliminary investigation of flight UA2477, which skidded off the runway at an airport in Houston, said the pilot felt the brakes on the BoeingAn initial report released by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the pilot had disabled the autobrakes on the Boeing 737 Max before landing at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas. According to the report, the United Airlines plane’s co-pilot said they thought the runway appeared wet, but that the pilot though it was dry.The report said the crew believed the “touchdown was uneventful” and conducted “at an appropriate speed, and within the touchdown zone.” The captain “did not ‘slow too much initially’ because the runway appeared dry, he wanted to expedite their time on the runway, and because he preferred decelerating gradually for passenger comfort,” the NTSB said.The pilot “said he applied the brakes manually using the toe brakes at about 6,000 feet from the end of the runway but felt as if the deceleration was less than normal,” according to the NTSB report. The preliminary investigation from the investigative agency said that data from the flight recorder indicated manual braking did not start until the aircraft was around 4,000 feet from the end of the runway.The captain became “concerned” as they approached the end of the runway and began to apply more pressure to the brakes and turn onto a taxiway. According to the report, the captain “felt the fuselage and rudder/brake pedals begin to shake violently.”The pilot “said he applied the brakes manually using the toe brakes at about 6,000 feet from the end of the runway but felt as if the deceleration was less than normal,” according to the NTSB report. It added: “He briefly released the brake pressure and the shaking ceased. He then reapplied aggressive brake pressure and the shaking resumed. The aeroplane slid off the runway and the left MLG tyres and nose wheels tyres entered the grass before the aeroplane came to a rest with its left wing low.”Boeing told the Mirror: “We appreciate the work of the National Transportation Safety Board and will continue to support the investigation.”

United Airlines said: “We are grateful to the first responders at the airport for helping our customers deplane safely, and we’ll continue to work with the NTSB and FAA on this investigation.”he NTSB has not made a conclusion on the reason behind the incident, which saw the United Airlines Flight 2477 hanging half on and half off the tarmac with significant damage. The left main landing gear broke off, but none of the six crew and 160 passengers were injured.
